Keema Aloo (Ground Beef and Potatoes)

Share

This Keema Aloo (Ground Beef and Potatoes) is hands down the best dish to make for a crowd. This recipe feeds 8 people, but I have doubled it before when I had a large crowd for dinner. You can make it in advance and heat it up just before you serve it. It works on its own as it’s a one-pot recipe and doesn’t need a side dish. But if you’re out to impress, you could serve some pillowy naan bread on the side.

Aloo is the Indian word for potatoes and Keema means ground meat. In this recipe, I use ground beef but you could substitute this with lamb or goat which are typically found in Indian dishes.

This recipe bursts with flavor from the dried Indian spices like turmeric, cumin and garam masala and it also benefits from the freshness of cilantro and ginger root.

To make Keema Aloo, you will need the following ingredients:

Steps to make Keema Aloo (Ground Beef and Potatoes)

1

Heat oil in a pot

3

Heat the oil a large saucepan over medium-high heat.

2

Cook the onion

12

Sauté the onion in the oil. Stir constantly for around 12 minutes until the onion begins to brown. If any bits of onion get stuck to the bottom, add a little 2 tbsp of water to deglaze the pan.

3

Add the beef, garlic, ginger, chili and cilantro

15

Add the ground beef, garlic, ginger, serrano chili, and cilantro to the saucepan. Cook while stirring for 10-15 minutes. When the beef is evenly browned, turn the heat down to medium-low.

4

Stir in coriander, salt, cumin, cayenne pepper, and turmeric

5

Add the coriander, salt, cumin, cayenne pepper, and turmeric into the beef mixture. Cook while stirring for around 5 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.

5

Mix in tomatoes and potatoes

15

Stir in the tomatoes and potatoes. Cover the saucepan and simmer for around 15 minutes until the potatoes are tender

6

Add peas

15

Stir the green peas into the dish and continue to cook for another 10-15 minutes until sauce has thickened and flavors have come together.

7

Sprinkle garam masala on top

5

Just before serving, sprinkle some garam masala over the dish. Cover and allow to rest for 5 minutes.

8

Serve

You can serve this keema aloo as it is or with naan bread on the side if your guests are hungry!

This Keema Aloo is hands down the best meal to make for a crowd. It all cooks in the same pot so there’s less mess to clean up. Don’t forget to tag #cookmerecipes in you dinner party posts.
