I love to make a batch of these French Breakfast Muffins as a special treat. And though there’s nothing French about these muffins, nor do they make for a nutritional meal to fit the breakfast bill, they taste awesome. Actually, these muffins were very popular in the 1970s, and they are worth trying today.
Making these muffins is pretty easy. Start by sifting together the dry ingredients, then add in the wet ingredients and stir until combined but still lumpy. Remember not to overmix! Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes. Next, take these buttery and sugary warm muffins and dip them in melted butter. And finally, coat them generously with cinnamon sugar. And I swear, this coating is addictive, so don’t skip it!
To make these French Breakfast Muffins, you will need the following ingredients:
Preheat the oven to 350 °F and spray a 12-cup muffin pan with cooking spray.
In a large bowl, sift together ½ cup sugar, ½ teaspoon salt, 1 ½ cups flour, 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder, and ¼ teaspoon nutmeg.
Add in ⅓ cup of melted butter, 1 egg, ½ cup warm milk and stir until combined but still has lumps. Don’t overmix.
Scoop or spoon the batter into the prepared muffin pan.
Bake for about 20-25 minutes until the edges are golden.
Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix ⅓ cup sugar with ¾ teaspoon cinnamon and place the remaining melted butter in a separate bowl.
Dip the top of each still warm muffin in melted butter, allow to soak for 10 seconds, and then press it in cinnamon sugar.
Serve warm and enjoy!
