This Old Fashioned Strawberry Shortcake recipe, is my grandmother’s recipe, handed down to her from her grandmother and I love making this with my daughter too!
A simple shortcake dough with strawberry cream filling, almost like a strawberry filled shortcake sandwich. It’s pretty and it’s easy and I think you’ll love this recipe. This is definitely one for the ladies!
To make Old Fashioned Strawberry Shortcake, you will need the following ingredients:
In a bowl, combine 1 cup strawberry halves, 1/3 cup sugar, orange juice, vanilla, and lemon juice and mash with a potato masher, well. Add another 2½ cups strawberry halves. Cover and chill.
In a bowl, combine flour, 3 tablespoons sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add butter, with a blender or 2 knives to form coarse crumbly bits.
Stir in buttermilk, until the dough becomes moist and sticky.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead lightly 4 times. Pat dough into a 6 x 4-inch rectangle shape and cut dough into 6 squares.
Place dough on a baking sheet with cooking spray for greasing and bake at 425 °F for 12 minutes. Then remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack.
Once cooled, on a serving plate, cut the shortcakes in half, horizontally. Spoon ¼ cup of the strawberry mixture over one half, top with the second half of shortcake, and add another ¼ cup of the strawberry mixture, on top of that, making a strawberry shortcake sandwich. Top each ‘sandwich’ with 1 tablespoon of the double whipped cream and garnish with whole strawberries, if you wish.
I really believe you’ll love this Old Fashioned Strawberry Shortcake recipe. It’s really simple and easy to follow and just a good, all around, treat. Enjoy it with a cup of milky tea!
