These Queen Anne Squares are a super impressive looking easy Christmas dessert. Three layers consisting of chocolate and coconut baked layers and a creamy cocoa topping. Your guests will love this one!
To make this layered cake, start by making a chocolate layer and a coconut layer. Add the layers to a baking pan. Avoid mixing or moving the layers too much to ensure the dark layer and the light layer stay separated. I tend to spoon the coconut mixture onto the top of the chocolate layer. Then, very gently spread the coconut layer evenly and flat using an offset spatula.
To make Queen Anne Squares, you will need the following ingredients:
Preheat your oven to 350 °F. Line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
Mix ⅔ cup of melted butter, ⅔ cup of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 1 egg together in a large bowl. Stir vigorously until well mixed.
Add 1 cup of flour and 4 tablespoons of cocoa powder. Stir these into the butter and sugar mixture until fully combined.
Transfer the base to the baking pan. Smooth the top and push the batter into corners and along the sides of the pan.
Combine 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract with 14 ounces of sweetened condensed milk. Stir until fully combined. Add 2 cups of coconut and stir until fully incorporated.
Spoon the coconut mixture onto the chocolate layer carefully. Try to avoid too much movement; this will help to keep the dark layer and the light layer separated, which will make the square look much prettier.
Bake for 30 minutes. Once cooked, remove the pan from the oven and leave to cool completely in the baking pan.
Whisk together 2 cups of confectioners’ sugar, 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 3 tablespoons of milk, and ¼ cup of softened butter until fully combined.
Spread the top layer over the cooled squares using an offset spatula.
Place the baking pan in the refrigerator for at least one hour to set.
Remove the squares from the pan using the edges of the parchment paper to help lift. Cut into 16 even squares.
Serve chilled.
