These Mexican Buñuelos are a deep fried dough treat which are dusted with cinnamon sugar while still warm. This Mexican buñuelos recipe produces golden fried dough balls which I think are like a cross between a donut and a fritter. They taste amazing with a mug of hot chocolate.
To make Mexican buñuelos isn’t difficult. Start by preparing a cinnamon sugar topping. Then make a dough from flour, sugar, salt, oil or butter, an egg, milk and masa harina, a type of flour made from corn. Shape the dough into little balls which you can leave round or you can flatten them into cake shapes. Fry the dough balls until golden and coat in cinnamon sugar before serving while still warm.
To make my version of Mexican Buñuelos, you will need the following ingredients:
In a shallow dish, combine 3 tablespoons of sugar with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
Sift 1½ cups of flour into a medium sized bowl with 1 teaspoon of baking powder.
In a separate bowl, beat 3 tablespoons of sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of salt with ¼ cup of oil or butter until smooth.
Add 1 large egg, ¼ cup of milk, and ½ a cup of masa harina.
Add the flour mixture gradually. Mix well after each addition, until a dough forms.
Shape the dough into meatball-sized balls, approximately 1½ inches in diameter.
Pour 1 cup of vegetable oil into a medium-sized saucepan and heat until hot. Fry the buñuelos for 6 - 7 minutes, turning occasionally until they are golden brown all over.
Once cooked, place the buñuelos on a plate lined with paper towels to drain.
Using tongs, roll each buñuelo on the shallow dish which contains the sugar and cinnamon mixture. Shake the dish until each buñuelo is well coated.
Serve immediately with hot chocolate.
