This wowzer cake uses my favorite red velvet cake recipe and turns it into a Red Velvet Heart Cake. It’s the ultimate Valentine’s Day gift made with love. The deep red color and vanilla-flavored cream cheese frosting make this heart cake a perfect choice for your Valentine’s Day dessert table.
Since this cake is only one layer, it’s easy to whip up with only one bowl and a hand-held mixer. The vegetable oil makes this red velvet cake extra moist and tender. For this recipe, I use red gel food coloring but feel free to use beetroot powder or any natural food coloring if that is what you prefer. As for the cream cheese frosting, you have two options: Pipe it on top or spread the frosting over the cake. If you plan to pipe, I recommend sifting the powdered sugar. And cut a cup of powdered sugar out if you plan to spread it over the cake.
To make the Red Velvet Heart Cake, you will need the following ingredients:
Preheat the oven to 350 °F.
In a large bowl, whisk together 1 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon cocoa powder, ¾ teaspoon baking soda, 1 cup sugar, and ½ teaspoon salt.
Add 1 large egg, ½ cup vegetable oil, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and ⅔ cup milk. Use a hand-held mixer on medium speed to mix until all the ingredients are combined, about 1-2 minutes.
Add 1 tablespoon red gel food coloring and mix until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
Pour the batter into the pre-greased and floured 9-inch pan and bake for 25 to 28 minutes or until the center is set and a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 to 15 minutes, and then transfer to a wire rack. Leave the cake to cool completely.
In a bowl, beat 8 ounces cream cheese and 1 tablespoon vanilla extract until smooth. Gradually add 5 cups powdered sugar and mix first on low speed until mostly combined. Then increase to high and beat until completely combined. Scrape the sides of the bowl as needed.
Once the cake is completely cool, pipe the frosting on top and garnish with sprinkles if desired.
Serve in wedges and enjoy!
