This Traditional Irish Soda Bread recipe bakes a warm, scrumptious and delicious bread using baking soda as one of the ingredients which is where it’s name derives from. Mostly enjoyed warm, as a breakfast bread with salted butter and jam, or honey and syrup, and even peanut butter or Nutella. No matter which spreads are your favorite, this bread suits them all!
To make Traditional Irish Soda Bread, you will need the following ingredients:
Preheat the oven to 400 °F. Line a cast-iron pot with parchment paper.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 4 cups of all-purpose flour, 1½ teaspoon of baking soda, 1½ teaspoon of salt and 2 tablespoons of sugar if you prefer a sweeter tasting bread.
Form a well in the middle of the flour and pour in 1¾ cup of buttermilk and stir to combine until a sticky dough forms. You may not need to use 2 full cups of buttermilk.
Turn out the sticky dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead about 3-4 times.
Shape dough into a round ball with a slightly flat top. Use a sharp knife to cut a deep cross on the flattened top.
Transfer loaf to a cast-iron pot and brush with buttermilk.
Cover a cast iron pot or baking dish with a lid and bake for 30 minutes then remove the lid and bake, uncovered, for another 15 minutes. Bread is ready when a wooden toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Cover bread with a kitchen tea towel and sprinkle a bit of water over, to moisten. Set aside for about 10 minutes to cool before breaking apart.
Best served warm with spreads of your choice.
This Traditional Irish Soda Bread recipe is so good. A delicious bread made from a very simple recipe and one I actually enjoy baking with my kids due to the simplicity and limited mess. What do you think? Let us know and tag #cookmerecipes online when you try out our recipes!
