These Easy Cherry Turnovers are a regular feature in my kitchen. They are so easy to make thanks to using canned cherries and pre-made puff pastry. A cream cheese glaze drizzled over the turnovers sets them off and makes them the perfect accompaniment for morning coffee or afternoon tea.
I start the cherry turnovers recipe with puff pastry, by cutting the puff pastry into squares. Place the pastry pieces on a baking sheet and spoon a dollop of cherry filling in the center of each. Bring the corners of dough together and pinch to seal. Don’t worry if the filling is still showing on the sides. Bake in the oven. Make a cream cheese glaze from butter, cream cheese, vanilla and powdered sugar and drizzle over the cooled turnovers.
To make Easy Cherry Turnovers with Puff Pastry, you will need the following ingredients:
Unfold one of the blocks of puff pastry dough. Cut along the fold lines to make three strips before cutting each strip into thirds. This will give you nine squares in total.
Preheat the oven to 375 °F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Place a square of dough on the parchment paper and place a tablespoon of cherry pie filling in the center of the square.
Bring each of the corners of dough together and pinch to seal. It's OK if the filling is still showing on the sides.
Repeat the process with the remaining dough squares.
Use a pastry brush to brush the tops of the turnovers with milk and sprinkle them with sugar.
Bake the turnovers in the oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
Repeat the whole process with the remaining sheet of puff pastry.
Beat 2 ounces of cream cheese with 1 tablespoon of butter until smooth. Beat in ⅔ cup of powdered sugar and ¼ teaspoon of vanilla. Pour in enough milk to achieve a pourable consistency.
Once the turnovers have cooled, drizzle with cream cheese glaze.
Serve the turnovers with morning coffee or afternoon tea.
