These Easter Bird Bread Rolls are perfect for a festive Easter treat. At last, spring is on its way! And it means it’s time to fill our kitchens with the scent of freshly baked Easter cakes, buns, cookies, and much more.
For me, cooking is an opportunity to share quality time with my kids, especially when baking together. They love scooping and sifting the flour, and of course, shaping these bird rolls too. It’s so fun! These cute rolls are soft, very slightly sweetened, and milky. And they have a golden crust that is lightly crisp. Not to mention, these bread rolls are at their very best served warm.
To make the Easter Bird Bread Rolls you will need the following ingredients:
In a saucepan, combine ½ a cup milk and ½ a cup water and heat to 110 °F. Add in 4 tablespoons unrefined cane sugar and stir to dissolve.
Transfer the milk mixture to a large bowl and add 2 teaspoons instant dry yeast. Mix to combine, cover and allow to sit for 10 minutes.
Add in ¼ cup oil and mix.
Add 3 cups all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon salt and stir until lumpy yet well-mixed.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and soft. Add more water if the dough is very dry.
Place dough in a greased bowl and turn once to coat. Cover and set aside until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
After doubled in size, punch the dough down and knead for 1-2 minutes. Cover and let stand for 5 minutes.
Divide the dough into 12 even pieces. Working with one ball at a time, roll the dough out into a rope about 8 inches long.
Tie each rope into a knot. Shape one end into a bird’s head and make a beak. Flatten the other end and press with a fork to create a tail.
Place shaped rolls on a lined baking sheet. Cover and let rise until puffy, about 45 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 380 °F.
Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
Remove the rolls from the oven and brush with butter. Make holes for eyes using a toothpick and press currents or choco chips into the holes.
Serve warm and enjoy!
