These blaas are white bread rolls that are super soft on the inside and crusty on the outside. They taste great on their own but traditionally are served simply slathered with salted butter for breakfast or at lunchtime filled with lunch meats or bacon.

This simple recipe requires nothing but basic pantry staples and 20 minutes of prep time. These soft rolls are best on the day they are baked. So make sure you have enough time for proofing and baking them. Yes, the recipe takes some time, but it is worth it!

To make the Irish Blaas, you will need the following ingredients:

Dissolve yeast

In a mixing bowl of a stand mixer, combine 1½ cups warm water, 1 tablespoon sugar, and 1 package dry active yeast. Set aside for 5 minutes to activate and proof.

Add remaining ingredients

Add 4 cups bread flour, ½ teaspoon salt, and ½ cup softened butter.

Knead

Mix with a dough hook attachment until combined. Then knead the dough for 5 minutes or until smooth and elastic.

Leave to rise

Cover and leave the dough to rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Divide into rolls

Knock the air out and turn the dough onto a floured surface. Roll out into a log and divide into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball. Then roll each ball in the ¾ cup flour.

Second rise

Roll the balls in the flour again and place them about 1 inch apart in a greased 9 by 13-inch baking pan. Cover and let rise for about 45 minutes or until doubled in size.

Heat oven

Heat the oven to 400 °F.

Bake the rolls for 18-22 minutes or until lightly browned.
