These Chocolate Orange Cookies are like a taste of my childhood Christmases. I adore the combination of chocolate and orange – it reminds me of Christmas in my childhood. In my family, we always had chocolate orange flavor treated from about mid December on. It is a tradition that I’ve brought to my own family. 

To make a batch of these delicious cookies, start by making cookie dough infused with orange flavor from orange juice and orange zest. Once the dough comes together, add chopped chocolate and the candied orange peel.  To shape the cookies, roll out the dough to slightly less than ½ inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to cut out cookies. I used a 1 ½ inch round cookie cutter. Bake in the oven. Once cooked, transfer the cookies to a wire cooling rack to finish cooling.

Steps to make Chocolate Orange Cookies

Heat oven and line baking sheet

Preheat the oven to 325 °F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Cream butter and sugar

Beat 1 cup of butter and ½ a cup of confectioners' sugar together using a handheld mixer until light and fluffy.

Add juice and zest of orange

Add 1 teaspoon of orange juice and 1 tablespoon of orange zest and beat into the creamed mixture.

Incorporate flour and salt

Add 2 cups of flour and ½ a teaspoon of salt. Beat the mixture until the dry ingredients are just incorporated.

Mix in chocolate and orange peel

Add 1 cup of chopped chocolate and ½ a cup of candied orange peel. Stir until just mixed through.

Roll out cookie dough

Cut the cookie dough into three equal portions. Cover two of the portions and set them aside. Lightly shape the cookie dough into a ball. Place it between two pieces of parchment paper. Use a rolling pin, to roll the third piece of dough out until it is a little less than ½-inch thick.

Cut out cookies

Cut out 1½-inch rounds using a cookie cutter. Transfer the cookies to the prepared baking sheet, leaving 2 inches between each cookie.

Use up scraps and remaining dough

Gather up the remaining scraps of dough and roll it out again until all the dough is used up. Repeat with the other two portions of cookie dough.

Bake

Bake for 13 minutes. Remove from the oven and leave to cool on the baking sheet for a couple of minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Serve with hot chocolate and enjoy!
