This Classic Tuna Noodle Casserole is a delicious one-dish dinner that you can prepare, cook and have on the table in under 1 hour. Made with handy store cupboard ingredients, this noodle casserole with tuna will be a family favorite in no time!
To make this delicious dish, start by cooking noodles in boiling water. Saute mushrooms. Add flour and milk to the mushrooms and continue cooking to make a sauce. Stir in the mayonnaise, frozen peas, tuna, and pimiento. Mix the sauce with the noodles and transfer to a casserole dish. Top with buttered breadcrumbs and bake in the oven until bubbling and golden brown.
To make my Classic Tuna Noodle Casserole, you will need the following ingredients:
Preheat the oven to 350 °F. Lightly grease a 2-quart casserole dish using butter or cooking spray.
Add 8 ounces of noodles to a saucepan of boiling salted water. Cook according to the package directions until al dente. Drain and rinse under hot water and set aside.
Melt 4 tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Saute the sliced mushrooms until golden brown.
Add ¼ cup of flour to the mushrooms and cook while stirring for 1-2 minutes.
Gradually pour in 1 ½ cups of milk and cook while stirring, until thickened.
Stir in ½ cup of mayonnaise, 1 ½ cups of frozen peas, 2 cans of tuna, and 2-3 tablespoons of pimiento. Bring the sauce to a simmer and continue cooking while stirring, for 1 minute longer.
Combine the sauce mixture with the noodles and stir to combine fully.
Transfer the noodle mixture to the buttered casserole dish.
Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in the pan and pour over 1 ½ cups of bread crumbs in a small bowl. Sprinkle the bread crumbs over the top of the casserole.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes until the casserole is hot and bubbling and the bread crumbs are golden brown.
Serve immediately.
