To make this Vanilla Cake Recipe, you will need the following ingredients:
Preheat the oven to 350 °F and butter and flour 2 9-inch cake pans.
In a bowl, whisk together 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, and ½ teaspoon fine salt.
Using a hand mixer on medium-high speed, beat 1 cup softened unsalted butter with 1 ½ cup granulated sugar until smooth and creamy, about 5 minutes.
Beat in 4 eggs, one at a time, beating well between each addition, scrape down the bowl as needed.
Add in 4 teaspoons vanilla extract and beat to combine.
Reduce the mixer to medium speed and alternate adding the flour mixture and 1 cup buttermilk to the butter mixture, mixing until just combined after each addition. Do not overmix!
Evenly divide batter between 2 cake pans and smooth out the top with a spatula.
Bake in the middle rack for 28-30 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean.
Allow cakes to cool in their pans for 10 minutes, and then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
Place one of the cakes on a platter and spread a generous layer of frosting on top and smooth it out into an even layer. Cover with the second cake top-side down and spread the remaining frosting on the top and sides of the cake.
Decorate as desired, slice and serve.
