This Vanilla Buttercream Frosting recipe is one of the easiest and stable frosting recipes I have ever made. It is creamy and light and perfect for decorating pretty much everything, whether a cake, sugar cookies, or piping beautiful swirls atop cupcakes. Besides, this recipe calls for just a few ingredients and steps. When choosing butter for this frosting, I always prefer unsalted butter that is lighter in color.

This frosting has a perfect amount of sweetness, and it also pipes perfectly. This recipe makes 5 cups of frosting, which is enough to generously frost up to 24 cupcakes or a 9-inch layer cake. What I love best about this recipe is that you can prep it ahead of time. The frosting will easily last in the fridge in an airtight container for up to one week. When ready to use, bring it to room temperature and give it a quick whip before frosting.

Steps to make Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

Beat butter

Using a stand or handheld mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, beat 1 ½ cups unsalted butter on high speed until lightened in color and whipped, about 5 minutes.

Add powdered sugar

Sift 4 ½ to 5 cups powdered sugar. Reduce speed to medium-low and add one heaping tablespoon powdered sugar at a time. Beat well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.

Add salt and vanilla

Add ¼ teaspoon fine salt and 4 teaspoons vanilla extract. Beat until well-combined.

Add heavy cream

Add in up to 3 tablespoons heavy cream, 1 tablespoon at a time, to thin to desired consistency. Beat 1 more minute until whipped.

Serve

Use immediately or transfer to an airtight container and store refrigerated for up to 1 week.
