This Beef and Cheese Empanada is part of our Cinco de Mayo recipes, a day of commemoration to the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
Today we celebrate with festival events full of art, dancing and of course food, food and more food! And you can bet these ground beef and cheese empanadas definitely make it to the party!
To make Beef and Cheese Empanada, you will need the following ingredients:
In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of oil and add 1 cup of diced onions. Cook for a few minutes until fragrant and translucent.
Add 1 pound of ground beef and season with 1 teaspoon of salt and ½ teaspoon of pepper and cook until the meat is no longer pink. Remove from heat and transfer to a mixing bowl.
Preheat the oven to 400 °F.
Add ⅓ cup of shredded Cheddar cheese, 2 tablespoons of ketchup, 1 tablespoon of yellow mustard and ½ teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce to the beef then mix well to combine.
Roll out the prepared pie dough and cut into 4 equal pieces.
Spoon the filling on one side of each of the dough pieces, leaving about ¼-inch borders around the edge to fold over into a triangle shape.
Use a fork to gently press around the edges to crimp. Transfer to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Brush the top of the empanadas with egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes until fully cooked and golden brown all over.
Cool slightly before serving.

Came from the tamale pie and have to admit this is much easier to make and a lot tastier for a cheese lover like myself.
Perfect lunch or dinner for anytime of the week :)
Swapped out the beef for turkey.
Does anyone know what worcestershire sauce is or what I can replace it with??
