Ingredients

3 lbs Potatoes russet potatoes, peeled and sliced into â…›-inch thick slices (approximately 4 large potatoes)
2 cups Ham cooked ham, cut into ½-inch cubes
1 cup Frozen peas
1 cup Onion finely chopped
1 cup Cheddar cheese sharp white Cheddar cheese, shredded
1 tsp Parsley fresh parsley, finely chopped (for garnish)
For sauce:
2 tbsp Butter
1 tbsp Garlic minced
2 tbsp All-purpose flour
1 cup Milk
½ cup Chicken broth
1 tsp Dried Italian seasoning
1 cup Cheddar cheese sharp white Cheddar cheese, shredded
Salt to taste
Black pepper to taste

This Creamy Ham and Potatoes au Gratin is a decadent side dish that is a perfect accompaniment to a special meal – be it Thanksgiving, Christmas, or a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary.

Start by layering potatoes in a dish with ham, peas and onions. Make a creamy cheesy sauce and pour over the potatoes in the dish. Cover with foil and bake in the oven. Sprinkle with Cheddar cheese and continue to bake until golden and melted. Serve garnished with freshly chopped parsley.

Steps to make Creamy Ham and Potatoes au Gratin

Heat oven

Preheat the oven to 400 °F.

Layer potatoes

Place half of the sliced potatoes in a single layer at the bottom of a 9x13-inch casserole pan. Sprinkle the potatoes with 2 cups of cubed ham and 1 cup each of peas and onion. Place the remaining half of the potatoes in a layer over the ham and peas. Set aside.

Prepare sauce

Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan over medium high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic. Sauté in the butter for about 1 minute until fragrant. Whisk in 2 tablespoons of flour to form a thick paste, and cook for 1 minute.

Add milk and broth

Whisk in 1 cup of milk and ½ cup of chicken broth. Keep whisking until the sauce is smooth with no lumps. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Simmer for about 5 minutes until the sauce thickens to the desired consistency.

Add cheese and season

Stir in 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning and 1 cup of Cheddar cheese. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Pour sauce over potatoes

Pour the creamy sauce over the potatoes in the casserole pan and spread it out evenly.

Bake

Cover the casserole pan with foil and bake in the oven for 50 minutes.

Sprinkle with cheese

Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle with the remaining cup of Cheddar cheese. Continue to bake uncovered for 20-25 more minutes until the cheese on top turns golden brown.

Remove from the oven and leave to cool for 15 minutes.

Serve garnished with fresh parsley.
