To make this simple pudding, start by stirring sugar, cocoa, cornstarch, and salt together in a saucepan. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir in milk. Bring the mixture to a boil. Cook while stirring constantly until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a metal spoon. Remove the saucepan from the heat. While the mixture is still warm, stir in butter and vanilla. Set aside and leave to cool briefly. Transfer to individual serving glasses. Serve the pudding warm, or chill in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve.
