Ingredients

2 Potatoes large or 3 small
½ Onion sliced
3 Hot pepper spicy peppers serrano, jalapeno or spicy pepper of choice
1 Green onion or scallion, chopped
6 oz Spam ½ regular sized can
2 cups Water
For sauce:
1 tbsp Garlic minced
2 ½ tbsp Soy sauce
2 tbsp Gochugaru Korean red pepper flakes
1 tbsp Gochujang pepper paste Korean red pepper paste
½ tbsp Sugar
½ tbsp Dwenjang soybean paste

    This Korean Potato and Spam Stew – Gamja Jjageuli is a delicious, wholesome dish made with potatoes, veggies, and classic Korean flavors like gochugaru, gochujang, and dwenjang soybean paste. When cooking this dish, the longer it cooks, the more the ingredient flavors will come together.

    To make this delicious stew, start by prepping the vegetables. Layer the vegetables in a medium sized pot, placing the potatoes down first, then top with onions and peppers. Smash up the spam and layer it on top of the onions and peppers in the pot. Add the chopped green onion and all the sauce ingredients. Fill with water, until all the ingredients are immersed. Bring to a boil and simmer. Once cooked, enjoy with a bowl of white rice.

    Prepare vegetables

    Cut 2-3 potatoes into large matchbox sticks. Slice ½ an onion and chop 3 spicy peppers and 1 green onion.

    Layer vegetables into a pot

    In a medium sized pot, layer the potatoes at the bottom, then top with onions and peppers.

    Smash spam

    Take the spam and smash it in a bag with your hand or using the back of a spoon.

    Add spam and green onion to pot

    Add the spam on top of the onions and peppers in the pot. Scatter in the chopped green onion.

    Add sauce ingredients

    Add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic, 2 ½ tablespoons of soy sauce, 2 tablespoons of gochugaru Korean red pepper flakes, 1 tablespoon of gochujang Korean red pepper paste, ½ a tablespoon of sugar, and ½ a tablespoon of dwenjang soybean paste to the pot.

    Add water

    Add 2 cups of water, or just enough until all the ingredients are immersed.

    Boil and simmer

    Bring to a boil and simmer for at least 10 minutes.

    Serve with white rice.
