Season 1½ pounds of beef strips with 1 teaspoon of salt and ¼ teaspoon of pepper.
In a large nonstick skillet, heat 2 teaspoons of olive oil and add the beef strips. Cook until browned then remove and set aside, keeping it warm.
Return the skillet to the heat and add 2 thinly sliced onions. Cook in the dripping until soft.
Add 1 clove of minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
Add 1 can of diced tomatoes, ½ cup of beef broth, ⅓ cup of dry red wine, 1 bay leaf, ½ teaspoon of dried basil and ½ teaspoon of dried thyme. Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce the heat and cook on a low simmer, uncovered for about 10 minutes.
