What is Ashkenazi Haroset? Best described as a sweet, loose, paste-like combination of fruit, spices, wine and matzah meal. Traditionally eaten at a Passover Seder meal to symbolize the clay – the work and the mortar of the slaves in Egypt.
Every family has their own recipe and mine combines apples, honey, sweet red wine chopped walnuts or almonds and a teaspoon of cinnamon. I personally love it!
To make Ashkenazi Haroset, you will need the following ingredients:
In a mixing bowl, toss 2 chopped apples and ½ cup of chopped walnuts or almonds until combined.
Add 1 tablespoon of sugar or honey, 2-3 tablespoons of sweet red wine and a teaspoon of cinnamon.
Serve and enjoy with traditional Matzah!
Some people enjoy this Ashkenazi Haroset by the spoonful and I am one of them. Although sweet in taste it really is enjoyed paired with other savory dishes. What do you think of this recipe? Let us know and contact us online with our hashtag #cookmerecipes on your own pages.
