Experience the ultimate comfort food recipe with the Best Swedish Meatballs! These meatballs are incredibly tender and juicy, made with a combination of minced pork and beef, and soaked white bread instead of breadcrumbs. They are lightly spiced with just a touch of nutmeg and allspice to give them the authentic Ikea meatball flavor. The meatballs are smothered in a creamy gravy that is truly mouthwateringly delicious. These are the meatballs you want to serve with creamy mashed potato, generous lashings of rich gravy and a sprinkle of fresh parsley.
Start by mixing the bread cubes with grated onion. Add in the minced meat, egg, spices, salt, and black pepper. Mix well with your hands. Using a small cookie scoop or a tablespoon, portion the mixture out into meatballs. Brown the meatballs all over (in batches) and remove to a plate. Add the butter to the skillet. Once the butter is melted, stir in the flour. Cook, stirring, for a minute. Then, gradually add the beef broth (or stock) and bring the sauce to a simmer. Add in the meatballs and cook until the sauce thickens into a thin gravy, about 10 minutes. Finally, add in the heavy cream and cook for another 2 minutes. Serve warm with a sprinkle of fresh herbs and a dollop of lingonberry jam for a maximally authentic experience.
To make the Best Swedish Meatballs, you will need the following ingredients:
Use a standard box grater to grate 1 onion.
Transfer the onion along with its juices to a bowl. Add the bread cubes and mix well. The onion juice should moisten the bread. If not, add a splash of milk. Let the bread soak for 1 minute.
Add in 10 ounces beef mince, 10 ounces pork mince, 1 egg, ¼ teaspoon grated nutmeg, ¼ teaspoon allspice powder, ¼ teaspoon black pepper, and ¾ teaspoon salt and mix well.
Using a small scoop, scoop and roll the mixture into 25-30 meatballs.
In a large skillet over medium high heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil and add half the meatballs. Brown the meatballs all over, about 3 minutes. Transfer them to a plate, then brown the remaining batch.
Pour off excess oil from the skillet. Reduce the heat to medium and add 3 tablespoons unsalted butter.
Once the butter is melted, stir in 3 tablespoons flour. Cook, stirring, about 1 minute.
While stirring, add about ½ cup beef broth, then gradually pour in the remaining beef broth, stirring constantly. Use a whisk, if required, to make the sauce lump-free.
Once the sauce is at a simmer, add the meatballs and juices pooled on the plate. Increase the heat slightly and keep it at a rapid simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the liquid thickens into a thin gravy, 8 to 10 minutes.
Add ½ cup heavy cream and simmer for 2 more minutes, then remove from the stove.
Serve with mashed potato or your side of choice. Enjoy!
