Preheat the oven to 350 °F. Lightly grease a 3-quart casserole dish with butter.
Place 4 cups of milk in a saucepan with ⅓ cup of sugar and 2 teaspoons of vanilla over medium high heat. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Stir to dissolve the sugar, but do not bring to a boil or it might split.
Place ¾ cup of rice in the prepared baking dish with ½ a cup of sultanas and ¾ teaspoon of cinnamon. Pour over the milk mixture and stir briefly before covering with a lid or foil.
Bake the pudding in the oven for 1 hour. Remove from the oven to stir every 20 minutes in order to separate any rice that starts to set on the base.
