Is there a recipe that is more synonymous with a city than these Homemade Philly Cheesesteaks? These iconic sandwiches were invented in Philadelphia and are made from thinly sliced pieces of beefsteak and melted cheese with onions and peppers in a long hoagie roll.
To make this delicious recipe, start by cooking peppers and onion until caramelized and season with salt. Remove the cooked onions and peppers from the skillet and set aside. Add the remaining tablespoon oil and cook the steak until it has almost reached your preferred doneness. Season and return the cooked vegetables to the skillet and toss to combine with steak. Place provolone cheese over the top of the mixture and cook until the cheese melts. Divide mixture among hoagie rolls to serve.
To make my version of Homemade Philly Cheesesteaks, you will need the following ingredients:
Cook 2 thinly sliced green peppers and 2 thinly sliced red peppers with 1 sliced onion in 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium heat, cook until the onions are caramelized, 12 to 15 minutes.
Remove the onions and peppers from the skillet and set aside.
Add the remaining tablespoon oil to the empty skillet and cook the steak for about 5 minutes until it has almost reached your preferred doneness.
Season the steak with salt and pepper.
Return the veggies to the skillet and toss well until combined with the steak.
Place 8 slices of provolone over the mixture and continue to cook for 3 more minutes with the lid on until the cheese is melted.
Divide the mixture between the hoagie rolls.
