Spice up your side of Brussels with this Crushed Brussels Sprouts recipe! We all know Brussels sprouts have a bad rap and it’s completely unjustified in my opinion. The problem is that people tend to overcook them and then of course they get mushy and lose their flavor. In this smashed Brussels sprouts recipe, the sprouts are flavored with garlic and red pepper and drizzled with olive oil before being baked, so they start to get a hint of caramelization around the edges.
To finish, the crushed sprouts are scattered with parmesan which bubbles and melts over the top. Certainly not your standard Brussels sprouts recipe, it will make you totally rethink your opinion on sprouts! To make Crushed Brussels Sprouts, you will need the following ingredients:
Preheat the oven to 400 °F. Lay some parchment over a baking tray.
Cut the ends off the sprouts and remove any outer leaves that have turned yellow.
Bring a pot of water to the boil. Place a steamer over the pan, add the sprouts and place a lid over them. Steam for around 10 minutes, until they have softened. Drain the sprouts and use a paper towel to pat them dry before placing them on the baking tray.
Drizzle the olive oil over the sprouts, then sprinkle with the garlic powder, salt, pepper and chili flakes. Toss well to coat them.
Use a heavy object or rolling pin to flatten the sprouts.
Put the tray into the oven for 15 minutes.
Remove and scatter the Parmesan cheese over the top. Set the oven to broil and put the tray under the broiler for a couple of minutes until the cheese starts to brown. Serve immediately.
