2 tbsp Instant decaffeinated coffee granules
6 Egg yolks
2¼ cups Heavy cream
1½ tsp Vanilla extract

Coffee Ice Cream


We go on vacation to my aunt’s house each year. She lives close to an ice cream parlour which makes the best Coffee Ice Cream I have ever tasted. It is unbeatable but still I decided to try to recreate it. While my recipe is not an exact recreation, this version of their coffee ice cream is sweet, delicious and creamy. I just had to share!

Start by combining milk, sugar, salt and coffee and heat until warm. Beat eggs and make the custard by mixing half of the milk mixture with the beaten eggs before returning the mixture to the pot. Strain the custard through a fine-mesh sieve set over a medium bowl and cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Whisk vanilla and cream into the custard and place it in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Steps to make Coffee Ice Cream


Heat milk, sugar, coffee and salt


Place 2½ cups of whole milk, 1½ cups of granulated sugar, ⅛ teaspoon of salt, 2 tablespoons of coffee granules in a medium saucepan and stir to combine. Cook while stirring occasionally over medium heat until steaming slightly. Turn the heat down to low.


Beat eggs


Beat six egg yolks lightly in a small bowl.


Make custard


Gradually pour half of the hot milk mixture into the beaten egg while whisking constantly. Return the mixture to the pot and continue to cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally for about 5 minutes, until the custard thickens.


Strain custard


Pour the custard through a fine-mesh sieve set over a medium bowl.




Cover the bowl of custard with plastic wrap. Make sure the wrap touches the surface of the custard to stop a skin from forming on top. Place in the refrigerator until cold.


Add cream and vanilla


To make the ice cream, whisk 2¼ cups of cream and 1½ teaspoons of vanilla into the custard until smooth.


Mix in an ice cream maker


Churn the coffee ice cream in an ice cream maker following the manufacturer's instructions.



Serve immediately or store in the freezer for up to two weeks.
