Inspired by the famous Red Velvet Cake, these Red Velvet Chocolate Chip Muffins have the same delicious taste. These muffins are incredibly soft, buttery, moist, speckled with chocolate chips, and perfect. They are a great treat for Valentine’s Day!   

These muffins are easy to make, but there are a few helpful tips to read before you start. Technique tip: set the eggs and buttermilk out on the counter 30 minutes before you start baking. It will ensure your batter comes together properly. Swap option: if you don’t have buttermilk on hand, add 2 ¼ teaspoon lemon juice or vinegar to your measuring cup and if you don’t have buttermilk on hand, add 2 ¼ teaspoon lemon juice or vinegar to your measuring cup and add enough water to fill to ¾-cup line. You can use 2% or whole milk.

Steps to make Red Velvet Chocolate Chip Muffins

Heat oven and prepare muffin pan

Preheat the oven to 350 °F and line a muffin pan with muffin liners. Set aside.

Combine dry ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together â…” cup cocoa powder, 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 ÂĽ cups brown sugar, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and Âľ teaspoon salt.

Combine wet ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together Âľ cup buttermilk, 2 large eggs, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, and 1 bottle red food coloring.

Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir in ½ cup melted butter. Mix the batter until just combined. Don’t overmix.

Fold in chocolate chips

Fold in 1 cup chocolate chips.

Pour the batter into the muffin cups and bake for 18-20 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean.
