Homemade Onion Bread

Share

If you haven’t picked up yet, I love baking and cooking from scratch and so this Homemade Onion Bread of course had to be added to the list. With an extremely simple dough recipe made from whole-wheat flour, milk for moisture, active dry yeast, 1 egg, a drop of sugar, sour cream, crispy fried onions, salt and some oil, who kneads a bakery, am I right!

A slightly chewy crust with a soft, crispy onion center that I can eat, slice by slice, with butter melted all over. This recipe is scrumptiously good!

To make Homemade Onion Bread, you will need the following ingredients:

Ingridiens for Homemade Onion Bread

Steps to make Homemade Onion Bread

1

Fry onions

10

In a large pan, fry 200 g finely chopped onions in 60 g of refined oil. Cook until the onions are reddened, crispy and fragrant.

2

Activate yeast

10

In a deep dish, gently stir 220 ml of warmed milk with 20 g of granulated sugar and 11 g of active dry yeast until combined then, cover and set aside for about 10 minutes to activate.

3

Add dough ingredients

1

In a mixing bowl, pour the activated yeast and add 50 g of sour cream, 1 egg and 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix to combine well.

4

Add flour

1

Gradually add most of the 440 g of sifted, whole-wheat flour, mixing in between each addition to combine into a dough.

5

Add fried onions

2

Just before adding the final amount of flour and once cool enough, add the fried onions along with the oil, to the dough and gently mix to evenly combine throughout.

6

Add remaining flour

60

Add the remaining flour and gently knead into the soft onion dough. Form a round shape, cover tightly with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm place for about an hour.

7

Knead

2

On a lightly floured surface, spread and knead the onion dough for a few minutes then, re-shape into a circle again. Cover with a large plastic cup or bowl, taking care to not touch the outer surface of the dough.

8

Rise

20

Set the covered dough aside for about 20 minutes to rest and rise until almost doubled in volume.

9

Bake

30

Using a sharp knife, carefully slice a few cuts along the top then transfer to a lined baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven at 375 °F/ 190 °C for about 30 minutes.

10

Rest

1

Once baked, remove from the oven and cover immediately with a kitchen towel. This helps to soften the crust.

11

Serve

Slice and serve slightly cooled but still warm!
