1 lb Ground beef
1 tbsp Olive oil
Green bell pepper chopped
1 Onion chopped
Carrots shredded
2 stalks Celery chopped
½ tbsp Ground paprika
½ tsp Salt
¾ tsp Black pepper
¼ tsp Crushed red pepper
1 pinch Cinnamon ground
1 pinch Ground cloves
¼ cup Water
⅛ cup Red wine
1 cube Beef bouillon cubes
2 tbsp Half-and-half
2 cups Potatoes peeled and sliced

Serbian Ground Beef, Veggie, and Potato Bake


This Serbian Ground Beef, Veggie, and Potato Bake is a recipe that I learned years ago when I had a roommate from Serbia. He would make this potato and ground beef bake on cold winter days, and I always thought it smelled so good! He taught me how to make it and I still like to assemble this one in the depths of winter!

To make this delicious bake, start by cooking a beef and vegetable sauce. Make the gravy sauce by adding water and red wine to cooked beef and vegetables and stir until heated through. Dissolve a beef bouillon cube into the mixture and mix in the half-and-half. Assemble the bake by layering potatoes at the bottom of a casserole dish. Pour in the beef and vegetable sauce and top with remaining potatoes. Bake in the oven until the potatoes are tender. Yum!

Steps to make Serbian Ground Beef, Veggie, and Potato Bake


Heat oven and grease baking dish


Preheat the oven to 400 °F and lightly grease a casserole dish.


Brown beef


Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add 1 pound of ground beef and cook until evenly browned all over. Remove the cooked beef from the skillet and set aside. Reserve the juices.


Sauté pepper, onions, carrots and celery


Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the pan and saute 1 chopped green pepper, 1 chopped onion, 1 shredded carrot, and 2 chopped celery stalks until tender.


Add beef and seasoning


Return the cooked beef to the skillet. Season with ½ a tablespoon of paprika, ½ a teaspoon of salt, ¾ teaspoon of black pepper, ¼ teaspoon of crushed red pepper, 1 pinch of ground cinnamon, and 1 pinch of ground cloves.


Make gravy sauce


Stir in ¼ cup of water and ⅛ cup of red wine and heat through. Add the beef bouillon cube to the mixture and stir until dissolved. Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in 2 tablespoons of half-and-half.


Assemble the bake


Place enough potato slices to cover the bottom of the greased casserole dish in a single layer. Transfer the beef and vegetable mixture over the potatoes, and top with the remaining potatoes.




Cover the dish and cook for 45 minutes in the preheated oven until the potatoes are tender.



Cool for a few minutes before serving.
