1 Onion large, chopped
1 head Cabbage small, chopped
2 (14½-oz) cans Diced tomatoes
1 (8-oz) can Tomato sauce
½ cup Water
2 cloves Garlic minced
2 tsp Salt
1 tsp Black pepper ground

When my family craves stuffed cabbage rolls and I don’t feel like rolling, I make this Unstuffed Cabbage Roll instead. This recipe is a crowd-friendly, no-fuss, and one-pot dish. And I consider this recipe the ultimate in healthy comfort food. Cabbage is packed with nutrients, fits different ways of cooking, and can feed a crowd on a budget. Win-win!

In this easy recipe, I add fresh chopped cabbage to the ground beef and onion mixture along with tomato sauce and diced tomatoes. And I get all the taste of fresh cabbage, juicy and tender meat, and savory sauce in each bite without additional work of rolling up individual cabbage rolls. I like pairing this dish with classic sides like rice, mashed potatoes, green beans, or a pan of 5-minute microwave cornbread. Delicious!

Steps to make Unstuffed Cabbage Roll


Cook beef and onion


In a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat, cook and stir 2 pounds ground beef and 1 chopped onion, breaking down the lumps of meat until browned, 5-7 minutes. Then drain and discard grease.


Add remaining ingredients


Add in 1 head chopped cabbage, 2 (14½-oz) cans diced tomatoes, 1 (8-oz) can tomato sauce, ½ cup water, 2 cloves minced garlic, 2 teaspoons salt, 1 teaspoon ground black pepper. Stir and bring to a boil.




Cover, reduce heat and simmer until cabbage is soft and tender for about 30 minutes.



Serve with a side of your choice and enjoy!
